Whole Brain Teaching Rules & Signs Freebies

I am still on a high from the WBT Midwest Conference this past week and can't wait to get back to Colorado to start piecing the different pieces and parts together. In the meantime, I am still in Ohio hanging out with my family and loving it :)

Until then, I am leaving you with some Whole Brain Teaching freebies!

New to my TpT store- Class Rules with adorable clip art from Scrappin' Doodles:
These rules come straight from Whole Brain Teaching and do vary a bit from the ones I have used in the past. You can read more about those rules HERE.

This set coordinates with my other WBT signs:
Both of these are available FREE in my TpT Store!

Freebie Fridays
Happy weekend :)

  3. Thanks for sharing these Stephanie. I wondered why you switched the last rule to the WBT "Keep your dear teacher happy". That's the one rule that never made sense to me, so I thought you may have some insight from the workshop. Maybe there's a reason I haven't considered.

    1. Hi Patti,

I totally understand where you are coming from and it's meant as a cover-all rule. 99.9% of the time, kids will do what you need them to do with Rules 1-4, but there is always that one kiddo who pushes the envelope every single time. I have definitely had these in the past and they seem to make it a point to find the loopholes in everything :( Very frustrating for you, the other students, and your class environment.

WBT added Rule 5 in as a non-negotiable for those types of kids, so when they will try to argue that they found a loophole of some sort, you can remind them of Rule 5 and that you, and only you, have the final say about what makes you happy.

I actually like Rule 5 and approach it from the perspective that I am happiest when kids are learning, and when kids aren't learning because of disruptive behavior, that is breaking Rule 5.

I'm planning to stick to my old rules next year, but may switch to this set, I'm not 100% sure yet. It definitely helped to hear them explain it and to reframe what "keeping me happy" meant (although I was hoping that bringing me Starbucks could have fit in there somewhere!!)

Thanks so much for your question- I hope this explanation helps :)

    2. Hi Stephanie, thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I was so happy to see your earlier version of the rules (without the WBT #5), and feel really comfortable with those.

I love your posters, and you have made it so much easier to start implementing some WBT techniques! Thanks again.

  4. I was just about to ask the same question as Patti :) Thanks for answering her. I'm still playing around with which 5 to use and appreciate your insight.

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

Let me know which ones you decide to go with- I am still leaning towards mine from last year from Ashley at the Polka Dot Patch. They fit so well with WBT, our school's PBIS, and just who I am as a teacher.

One thing I did like was that when it came to playing whole-class games, the rule was "Keep your Scorekeeper (me) happy"- I thought that might clear up a lot of the craziness that sometimes rears its ugly head ;)

      So I guess I need 5 1/2 rules!

    2. Hi again Stephanie-I meant to ask, do you see a benefit from separating "Raise your hand to speak" and "Raise your hand to leave your seat"? I kind of liked your version, "Raise your hand to speak or stand"

I also love that you shared all of the gestures with your version of the rules.

  6. I love the idea of the WBT, but I haven't done enough of my research yet to see how exactly I will be able to work it into my classroom. Thanks for the posters!

    1. There are definitely a million different pieces, so I completely understand! I would start slow (Class- Yes, Scoreboard, Rules) and watch some YouTube videos- those helped me see it in action which was the most helpful :) Let me know any questions you have- I am happy to help!

  7. Tried printing out the rules from your TPT store but only the clip art shows, no rule. Not sure why?

    1. Be sure you are using the newest version of Adobe Reader- for some reason, TpT downloads won't let you view them correctly in Preview or an older version of Adobe. Hope that helps :)

  9. I love the posters but I have one question.......Would you consider adding an alternative for Rule # 5 from the rules you used last year (Be safe, be kind, be honest)?

  10. Thank you for the WBT posters. I am new to this and doing a lot of research this summer. I noticed on your Yes/Oh no card is different from the Mighty yes/mighty groan chant. Is your "oh no" basically the same as a "mighty grunt"? If so, do they just say "oh, no" really quickly or do they clap with it? Just wondering. Thanks for all you have done! It has helped me a lot!

    1. Hi Amy,

Thanks so much for your question! The Yes/No Way sign is for assessment at the end of a lesson- I wrote a post about that here: http://3rd-grade-thoughts.blogspot.com/2012/06/whole-brain-teaching-yesno-way-qts.html. I hope that helps!

  13. These are so cute! Thank you for sharing! I was wanting to tweak these a little bit for my own classroom but wondered what program you used to make these on and how you got the shadow around the big font.

  15. Great work! I was wondering - I'd like to modify the Rules posters for my classroom - can you point me in the right direction on how you do the posters? What software, etc. do you use and is there a website or something that can get me started on doing posters? Thanks a bunch! :)

  16. I am a new teacher (just finished my first year) and have just begun to investigate WBT. I think it would have been extremely helpful this past year and would like to start next year with it right away. I'm teaching second grade and love this version of the rules. I seemed to have trouble finding it on TpT though. Has it been taken off or am I just missing it? Thanks!
