Whole Brain Teaching: Reciting the Rules on Friday

Every morning, at the start of our Morning Meeting, we recite our five classroom rules.

The rules I use are similar to Whole Brain Teaching's, but with a twist. I use the set from The Polka Dot Patch. You can read all of the specifics on the rules and gestures HERE.

Something fun that we do every Friday is reciting the rules in a different voice. It helps keep up the interest and engagement, plus, we all need a laugh Friday morning :)

I have seen different fluency practice ideas a lot on Pinterest and I think these would be a wonderful resource for rule-reciting. Sometimes the Meeting Leader has an idea themselves- one girl decided to recite the rules as if we all had a mouth full of food!- but other times, the student may need some inspiration.

Find these at I Love 2 Teach!

All I am doing is printing these on cardstock, laminating them, and putting a binder ring though a hole in the top corner. I will keep these near our Morning Meeting Bucket and talking ball for our Meeting Leader to use if he/she needs them.

Do you have these fluency cards in your class? Try incorporating them into your rule recitation- it's a great way to wrap up the week!

  4. We recite the rules as a chant with actions. The kids know as soon as I start the rhythmic pattern that we are reciting the rules. And if they seem to be forgetting to follow the rules A LOT at any point in the day, I'll start the rhythm and just like that we do a quick review. They love it all year. Great idea to use the different voices...I do it for other things but am definitely adding this in for the upcoming year. Thanks.

    1. Hi Erika,

Thanks for sharing your routines! Don't you just love how you can do something simple to refocus their attention with the rules? If I hear my thirdsters getting a little chatty during directions all I have to say is, "Rule #1" and the kids repeat our Rule #1 and it gets us all back on the same page :) Love WBT!!

  5. We don't do whole brain teaching but I'm definitely intrigued! I love the Morning Meeting ideas as well as doing it in the funny voice and reiterating the class rules every day. Brilliant plan - it build community and trust.

I'm definitely going to think about incorporating Morning Meetings into my days at least!

  6. I just started researching whole brain teaching and it looks like something I definitely want to start. I found your blog during my research and am your newest follower.
